HUMMAX System MaxII Humidification and Heating System

A revolutionary idea in humidification systems

For the first time in a heating/humidifying system, a porous polyethylene hollow fiber has been used. By using the special properties of hollow fibers, this method increases the effective surface area of humidification by a factor of 3 compared to traditional chamber-type humidification systems. This unique, patented system provides full humidification along the entire length of the airway hose thus providing full humidification without the problems associated with conventional humidifiers.

How does it humidify?

By using vapourization

For example, if you leave a glass of water out in the open for a while, the water level in the cup will lower. This is because water vapourizes from the surface.

The HUMMAX humidifying system uses this same principle for humidification by using a porous polyethylene hollow fiber at the boundary between air and water. This porous fiber has holes approximately 0.1m wide. The action of the hollow fiber vapourizes water travelling inside the fiber and humidifies the air outside the fiber. Water vapour can travel through the holes to vapourize the air but water cannot pass.

Unsurpassed Water Contact Surface Area

The porous polyethylene hollow fiber is comprised of a material that is over 75% air. This means that water travelling in the fiber has an unsurpassed amount of surface area exposure from which to vapourize. In practical terms, this means that a HUMMAX device with 32 strands of 120cm hollow fiber can fully humidify air with a flow rate of 3~30 liters per minute.

What is Porous Polyethylene Hollow Fiber?

Manufacturing Method

The way to create porous polyethylene hollow fiber is very unique. First, polyethylene resin is melted in heat, and with a machine similar to one used to create spaghetti, the resin is pushed through a machine to create long, transparent strands of polyethylene. By stretching these transparent strands, tiny cracks are made in the polyethylene which then gives it a white appearance. The size of these cracks can be controlled by changing the tension as well as speed of streching and this process is used to create cracks that are exactly 0.1m big.

Highly Efficient Heating and Humidification

Heating and Humidification Along the Full Length of the Breathing Circuit

Water condensation in the breathing circuit is caused by the temperature variations of the air passing through the circuit. Not just a function of the room temperature, the large variations of the air flow caused by the breathing patterns of the patient is also a major factor. Because of this, traditional humidifiers have a big problem with humidity lost through condensation while in the breathing circuit. The HUMMAX system, on the other hand, humidifies the air using the entire length of the breathing circuit, therefore, condensation while in the circuit is not a factor and the system can deliver 100% humidification with high stability.

Reducing Bacteria and Germs

Because the size of the holes in the hollow fiber is 0.1m, this can block out harmful bacteria and germs.
