- Kromek to produce Metran-based ventilators for COVID-19 response
- Licence agreement signed with UK detection equipment producer for ventilator manufacture and
sale in the UK
Metran, a leading Japanese supplier of medical devices in the respiratory area is pleased to announce that it has signed a license agreement with Kromek (AIM: KMK), a worldwide supplier of detection technology focusing on the medical, security screening and nuclear markets., to license the manufacture and sale of Metran’s artificial ventilator in the UK to support the COVID-19 response.
Under the terms of the agreement, Metran has already supplied detailed designs and manufacturing guidance to Kromek and, subject to receiving appropriate regulatory approval for use in UK, Kromek is expected to commence production of ventilators before end April 2020. Kromek intends to produce up to 2000 units within twelve weeks with 1000 units available within eight weeks.
For over 30 years, Metran has specialised in the development and manufacture of respiratory equipment, and is Japan’s leading ventilator manufacturer. Its ventilators has been in use in Japan and the USA for over 10 years, offers an effective solution to the current crisis where ventilators needs to be manufactured rapidly to meet the demands of the National Health Service.
Dan Nitta, President of Metran, said: “We have seen an unprecedented demand for ventilation equipment in recent months. We realised at an early stage of this crisis that we needed to think beyond our in-house manufacturing capability if we were to make a substantial impact. Therefore, we reached out globally to find partners who could help us to expand our capacity, and Kromek were the first company to respond to us with a concrete proposal. Since then we have been working closely with Arnab Basu and his highly professional team to enable production of our emergency ventilator in the UK, for hospitals in the UK and beyond. With a combination of Metran’s experience in the ventilation field and Kromek’s skill as a designer and manufacturer of advanced electronic equipment, we believe that we can make a substantial contribution to the fight against COVID-19.”
Dr Arnab Basu, CEO of Kromek, added: “Working through the British Embassy in Japan and with substantial help from the Department of International Trade, we are delighted to have been able to fast track this technology transfer. By combining our existing manufacturing skills with Metran’s proven technology, we can build these robust ventilators without delay and deliver to the NHS frontline in a rapid manner. Any procurement of this equipment from Kromek will have the additional benefit of safeguarding and creating employment in the North East as well as contributing to this region’s fight against COVID-19. I would like to thank the team in Metran to make this happen at such speed”
